Camrose Wedding Planner: Paige + Sean

February 2, 2018 by Joelle Johnson Leave a Comment

For those who don’t know me, I was born and raised in Camrose, Alberta so when Paige and Sean first got in touch with me about planning their wedding in Camrose I was ECSTATIC! Sean is the owner of the Norsemen Inn in Camrose so it was only fitting to host their big day in a space that was so near and dear to his heart. After a few meetings with these two, their vision was a lavish, elegant wedding reception that would completely revamp the Norsemen Inn’s banquet space into something it has never been before which you will certainly see as you scroll through their photos! The end result was absolutely extraordinary to the point where guests asked “Are we still in the Norsemen?” and “We’ve never seen this space so transformed!”…I’d say mission accomplished!

Paige + Sean’s ceremony was held at the Church of God by Pastor Brian Krushel where all of their closest family and friends sat in beautiful wooden church pews and witnessed their I do’s!

An elegant wedding set with navy, ivory and gold accents including soft florals and lush greens to augment the remaining decor were the focus of this receptions design. A full perimeter draping in the reception was installed to soften the walls and brighten the space along with hanging string lights to create the delicate glow of being beneath the stars. Instead of using a traditional round or rectangle table seating plan we designed their guest tables in the shape of an “x” to maximize the floorspace and add a new level of dimension. In each “x’s” middle was an incredible four foot floral centrepiece to round off the luxurious elegance that we were after. Guest tables were dressed in rich ivory and navy sequin linens with gold beaded charger plates, flickering tea lights, and fresh garland greens.

Being that the Norsemen Inn has a microbrewery located in the hotel, guests sipped on Sean’s favourite brew the Longship Blonde Ale and Paige’s favourite cocktail, the Cosmopolitan Martini.  Friends of theirs had their own band called The Brown Paper Bags where guests flooded the dance floor all night long–to say this dance was bumpin’ would be a total understatement! Tracey and Mark with Crown Photography documented Paige + Sean’s wedding day magic so perfectly and we absolutely LOVE that they made time for Paige + Sean to spend a few private moments with one another in this beautiful space before all of their guests arrived. To Paige + Sean, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for allowing us to be a part of your wedding day, huge congratulations again to you both!

Red Deer Wedding Planner: Haley + Lucas

December 12, 2016 by Joelle Johnson Leave a Comment

We’ve all dreamt about it. The most beautiful outdoor wedding reception with the perfect tented wedding reception, a clear sky and warm sun to boot. Well I am here to tell you that Haley & Lucas’s wedding day was just that. On the Thursday before the wedding, Lucas and I were constantly on the Weather Network’s app watching the weather yo-yo between rain and sunshine. On the night before the wedding I said to Lucas “We really need to talk about Plan B for the ceremo—” “It’s not going to rain Joelle, don’t worry. Just trust me!” I threw my hands up in the air, said a little prayer to the weather gods and as you will see from their wedding photos below, the sun broke through the clouds and they had the most incredible day of weather for their special day!

Haley & Lucas had their first look pictures out in the park before their ceremony took place where they wrote one another a letter to read before they turned around— their reactions are absolutely priceless. Their ceremony took place underneath a beautiful maple tree in Coronation Park in Red Deer, AB. After they sealed their vows with a kiss and were introduced as the new Mr. & Mrs. Plamondon, their guests visited and played lawn games out in the park until the wedding reception began.

The few words that Haley & Lucas consistently used while we were in the planning process was that they wanted to have a ‘nature infused’ wedding. Between the eucalyptus leaves on guest tables, the wood seating cards, an outdoor venue and all the natural florals…Haley & Lucas hosted the most refreshing outdoor garden wedding 😉  The tented reception was held at Haley’s fathers residence where we were surrounded with foliage and a fresh summer breeze. Their guest tables were dressed in white linens with a grey table runner, candlesticks and fragrant greens trailing down the middle with beautiful hand written wood seating cards for each guest. Haley’s brother built these incredible pentagon’s that floated behind the head table against a lilac bush that were filled with candles and fresh greens. After their guests finished their dinner, they were treated to a milk & cookie bar with chilled white and chocolate milk and iced coffee for all to enjoy!

With all of my clients, it is always so wonderful to finally meet all of their families and friends after spending so much time with them planning their wedding day. Haley, Lucas and family, thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of this beautiful celebration! Congratulations to you both and may you carry the joy of that special day close to your heart as you journey the road of life together.

Canmore Wedding Planner: Janet & David

October 16, 2016 by Joelle Johnson Leave a Comment

Meet the Calow’s. Janet and I went to high school together in Outlook, SK and never would I have guessed that nine years later we would be planning her wedding day together!

David took Janet out to Brierwood Park in Saskatoon for their very first date. One snowy winter evening while walking around the park taking in all the crystal ice sculptures, David slowly walked themselves back to the very same spot that they shared not only their first date, but their first kiss too. In that same spot he got down on one knee and asked Janet to marry him! After closing the ring box and saying “Are you serious!?”, Janet said YES!

Janet and David said their I Do’s underneath the warm sun in front of the Three Sister’s Mountain range in Canmore, AB at Quarry Lake. We put together a birch pole altar and hung light coral, ivory, and white linens that fluttered in the wind. Guests filled their treat bags with trail mix and sweets while listening to Janet & David repeat their vows to one another. Their brunch reception was held at Canmore Coast Hotel where we used coral and champagne as their colour scheme and incorporated some woody, mountain inspired decor keeping things colourful, fresh and simple.

A big thank you to Janet & David for allowing me to have a hand in putting your wedding day dreams together. Love you guys to the mountains and back!!

Rich Medieval Romance

July 8, 2016 by Joelle Johnson Leave a Comment

If I were to sum up in one word my passion for wedding and event design it would be distinct. Distinct is defined as being recognizably different in nature from something else of a similar type. My inspiration for this shoot came from a desire to create something that was both mysterious and exotic. I was after a concept I haven’t seen often in the world of wedding design that incorporated flare, edge, and boldness while still maintaining a level of romanticism and elegance. Look at these pictures…I think I #nailedit.

I titled this shoot, “Rich Medieval Romance” due to the warm glow of the florals flirting with the coolness in the colour and texture of the place settings. The beaded dress, the black lace fondant details, the rich stationary and the soft radiance of the lumieres–it tells a new tale of romance.

Now off you go! Indulge in this shoot and bask in all its smouldering passion.

Thank you to my incredible team of vendors who came on board for this shoot and made it an absolute show stopper (see them all listed below). Folks, these vendors are undeniably talented and are an absolute delight to work with. Pay them a visit to their sites and checkout even more of their talent and what they offer.

Vendor Spotlight: Flowers by Willows

May 25, 2016 by admin Leave a Comment

When I set out for Winfield to visit Rachelle at her little floral shop to pick her brain and sip on some Starb’s, I wasn’t expecting a sensation overload when I walked through her doors. The smell….sigh. Its a smell that you cannot, will not, nope, never EVER get sick of! Her counters were filled with freshly cut peony’s, circus roses, snips, bridal inspiration pictures and her floors with trimmings, flower petals, and water buckets galore. I. Was. In. Heaven!! So, allow me to introduce you to Mrs. Rachelle Willows! *insert whistles and clapping here*

Flowers by Willows

You can find this beauty out horseback riding, playing with her black German Shepherd ‘Haven’ or sipping a glass of red when she isn’t in her shop putting together some of the most stunning floral arrangements and pieces you ever did see! Her floral design company, Flowers by Willows, has a very unique characteristic that differs greatly from your traditional florist. She’s what they call a ‘farmer florist!’ Now, you’re probably thinking, a “farmer florist? Uhh…is that even a thing in Alberta?” Keep reading…

Rachelle was raised on Cooking Lake where she was surrounded by her mother’s rose bushes and peony’s and is where her love for all things floral first began. Growing up surrounded by farmers fields and the farming community is where she gained a concrete understanding of what it meant to grow, buy, and support local growers. She decided to start her own floral design company in 2011 after working for her family’s floral design shop in Sherwood Park once known as The Purple Daisy. She has created centrepieces, bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages, wristlets, pomanders, flower crowns, altar florals for over 200 weddings and has created quite the name for herself here in the Edmonton and area Wedding Industry. As a result of growing her own flowers, Rachelle takes a lot of pride in being able to supply a higher quality product to her clients that is grow in Albertan soil. Although she is not a Certified Organic farmer florist, Rachelle does not use any pesticides or chemicals in her growing techniques. “It’s definitely not easy. It’s a lot of work and I wake up every morning wondering what the Alberta weather is going to bring that day however somehow, it always seems to work out.”

We asked Rachelle a ton of questions that all you couples out there would be anxious to know the answers to when it came to the floral design of your weddings. Go and grab yourself a hot cup of coffee and join our Q & A sesh:

Flowers by WillowsQ: Where does a couple even begin when it comes to thinking about flowers for their wedding?
A: “One of the first things a couple should do is figure out what colours they want to use and what style best communicates both of their personalities. When they come to their floral consultations with just those few things figured out, its extremely helpful because I’m better able to hone in on what kind of florals will match. In the consultation I’ll also ask them if they have a certain flower that carries any kind of emotional significance that they would like me to build off of. It sometimes can be a process of discovery because talking things through forces them to select descriptive words which can also be extremely helpful to me when figuring out exactly what the client is looking for.”

Q: How are couples better able to maximize their budget?
A: “Multi-use items. If a couple wants an archway covered in garland for their ceremony, I can pull the archway apart and turn it into a table runner for all of their guest tables. Displaying their bouquets on their head table, using different types of ceremony arrangements and placing them on their guest book table at their reception–things like this will help keep you in the black when working within a budget. My second piece of advice is to be flexible with your flower choices. I’m finding that more and more couples are giving me a lot of freedom when it comes to the floral design which allows me to really create something beautiful while hitting their budget. For couples who are after something more specific, that’s definitely okay too! Being open to substitutions and design suggestions is what will allow me as a professional to deliver the best results.”

Hitched by JoelleQ: What kind of things should couples keep in mind when designing their centrepieces?
A: “Location, lighting and stability. Location: certain flowers thrive in warmer conditions, and others…well, not so much. Hydrangea’s wilt quickly in warm conditions whereas roses will do just fine, so keeping in mind where your ceremony and reception are taking place is very important. Lighting: Good lighting is key to creating an ambiance at any occasion and incorporating colour can be a really fun touch. However, if you want white roses and have pink lighting…say hasta la vista to your once white roses! Mentioning any potential coloured lighting that you may want to incorporate is very important.  Height/stability: Let’s put it this way, if you have a family member or friend who has had one wobbly pop too many and bumps into the table, will your centrepieces hold up or come crashing down? Making sure you have shake proof centrepieces will remove any cringe worthy happenings throughout your reception.”

Q: What kind of things should the bride-to-be keep in mind when visualizing her bouquet?
A: “Size and weight. Bouquets can weigh anywhere from 5-15 lbs. Depending on what you’re comfortable with carrying throughout your wedding day can play a big factor in deciding on what it will look like. The size of the bouquet is also very important and I will ask her if she likes the flawless white roses in a perfect sphere, a more asymmetrical design with more of a garden/wild flower feel, or somewhere in between?  I also like to ask her to pick her favourite flower that is representative of her personality and why. I can then create a design that truly communicates her personality and style based on those few elements which makes it much easier for me to design the rest of the wedding florals.”

Q: What is one thing you want every bride to know?
A: “Flowers are WORTH IT! Flowers are true reflections of a couples personality and style because there is so much that can be done with them on a large or small scale. Its an opportunity for them to add their own touches and flare to their wedding with the help of my expertise. They add depth, texture, and warmth to any space and have the ability to transform that space into something so spectacular. Flowers can certainly be expensive but with a little help and some careful selection and planning, you just might be pleasantly surprised at the wow factor you are able to achieve while maintaining your budget.”

Hitched by JoelleQ: What is the best piece of advice you have for all the bride-to-be’s out there?
A: “Keep an open mind, trust your florist and be realistic and honest with them in regards to your budget. This is where Pinterest can be the best and worst resource when it comes to finding ideas for things you may want to incorporate into your wedding day. Going into your floral consultations with an open mind gives us as florists a chance to provide you with options that are both beautiful and affordable.  This will leave you feeling excited and inspired versus feeling deflated. A little flexibility can go a long way.”

Q: Last but not least, what is your favourite flower and why?
A: “Peony’s. They are one of the first flowers to bloom in the Spring at my farm and they just make me smile! They are simply beautiful. The way they smell, their colours, and their size are my favourite things about them. They take me right back to being a little girl in grandma’s backyard running around from one to the next smelling each and every stem.”

So there you have it–a floral education and a few great tips for all you couples out there! A HUGE thanks to Rachelle for taking the time to answer a few questions and we hope you all learned a thing or two during our coffee date. In fact, we would love for you to share things you learned both today and in the past. Maybe you had something that was really helpful to you as you were deciding on your florals for your wedding, or maybe you would like to share a picture of your bouquet from your wedding! Either way, we would love to hear it, so leave your comments below! If you have any questions about Rachelle’s farmer florist practices or interested in having Rachelle creating something fantastic for your next event, simply click here! Until next time ya’ll….
